국문초록

문헌적 증거에 따르면 고대 인도의 사성 계급(Varṇa)을 인정하는 브라흐마니즘(Brahmanism) 문화권 내에서 그에 대한 반발로부터 출발하였다. 붓다(Buddha)는 깨달음을 얻기 전 이미 베다(Veda)의 교의를 잘 알고 있었고, 전통의 사성제 계급을 부정하였고, 우파니샤드의 자아(ātman) 관념을 비판하여 무아설(anātmavāda)을 주장하였다. 그는 현세적인 브라만교의 입장과 자이나(Jaina)로 대표되는 극단적인 고행주의의 입장 사이에서 중도를 취하였다.
