Abstract

Seon Master Jinul (知訥, 1158~1210)'s life can be summarized in three key words: his leaving home, his awakenings, and the Samādhi and Prajñā Community. Furthermore, it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that his whole recorded life is related with the Samādhi and Prajñā Community, or Seon Cultivation Community. He guided people's practice with his own three major approaches and he talked the dharma on the basis of Buddhist texts including the Diamond Sutra by which he could awake before. Besides, he supplemented his teaching with his own writings.

His teaching of practice seen in his writings is, also, summarized into the sudden awakening and gradual cultivation, the concurrent development of samādhi and prajñā, and the shortcut method of Hwadu seon. He said, "the sudden awakening and gradual cultivation is a principle of practice which every saint takes a rule and cultivates, and the concurrent development of samādhi and prajñā is conclusion of all practice approach," and added that the shortcut method was another approach to awakening without language in seon besides the concurrent development of samādhi and prajñā.

First of his three major approaches, the sudden awakening and gradual cultivation is, after awakening that one's mind is originally pure and non-deluded and that everyone is not different from Buddha at all, practicing one's mind relying on this awakening. It is also, after having the faith and understanding that one's delusively discriminating mind is just like the bright radiating wisdom of all buddhas, practicing mind depending on this faith. These awakening and cultivation are not different between seon and doctrines from each other. Because one cultivates after awakening that one's mind is just Buddha and that one's own nature is the Buddha nature, cultivating after awakening is called by the practicing of cultivating saint's womb (聖胎長養), and, therefore, everyone can make oneself saint through these practice for long and long time (久久成聖). Jinul's other two practice, the concurrent development of samādhi and prajñā and the shortcut method, are also cultivating after sudden awakening. These are classified just by people's capacities.

The second, the concurrent development of samādhi and prajñā is practicing the essence and function of mind that has both the voidness and numinous awareness (空寂靈知) and the calmness and alertness (寂寂惺 惺). Practitioner with low capacity must calm down his/her restless mind through practicing samādhi first, and then control his/her depressed mind through prajñā. This practice makes his/her restless and depressed mind harmonious, and enable the practitioner to reach attaining the concurrent alertness and calmness, or the concurrent samādhi and prajñā. Meanwhile, practitioner with high capacity can develop samādhi and prajñā concurrently at the first moment, and then reach the concurrent alertness and calmness without pause. Jinul explained these different capacities with terms of the Following Appearance Gate (隨相門) and the Own Nature Gate (自性 門), and said that practice of samādhi and prajñā by whom had reached such a position cultivated was those of samādhi and prajñā were bright and perfect, and those of no falling to function.

The last third, the shortcut method is practicing of cultivating Hwadu. In his Excerpts from the Dharma Collection and Special Practice Record (法集別行錄 節要) and other works, he explains that the shortcut method is the practice of removing both obstacles of knowledge remained in the Perfect and Sudden Gate (圓頓門), and obstacles of function in the Own Nature Gate (自性門) of the concurrent development of samādhi and prajñā. His point, from his own experience, is that these obstacles arisen during the practice can be removed by the shortcut method. Although practice after sudden awakening is equal to everyone, people's various capacities makes him talk about different capacities at first.

Jinul says that there are two gates in the shortcut method: Investigating Hwadu Gate (參究門) and Investigating Doubt Gate (參疑門). The former is destroying doubts through immutable mind, attaining principle of One Mind by oneself, and widely spreading buddhist teachings through one's wisdom. The latter is Hwadu practitioner's destroying his/her doubt, and similar to revealing the right view in the Perfect and Sudden Gate (圓頓門). Also, because people who cultivate the latter which has functions of contemplating, listening, understanding, and practicing, are different from learned preachers who seek to profits and fame, and unusual in tat times, they are thought to be honorable. Though the former is the best, the latter is in the right path. It is same like taking the Following Appearance Gate (隨相門) and the Own Nature Gate (自性門) in the second practice of samādhi and prajñā as the right paths, for there are different capacities among people who practice the last shortcut method.

As seen above, each of Jinul's three major approaches is practicing after sudden awakening. Practitioner enters each gate of them and cultivates according to his/her own capacity. If s/he has remained obstacles in the path of the Perfect and Sudden Gate (圓頓門) and of the Own Nature Gate (自性門) as like Jinul's experience, s/he has chance to cultivate additional practice through the last shortcut method. The point is not practical approach, but practitioners' capacities.

It is same as understanding of the sudden awakening and sudden cultivation, and the sudden awakening and gradual cultivation. Even though the last shortcut method, out of Jinul's three major approaches, is occasionally said to be of the sudden awakening and sudden cultivation, and the others are of the sudden awakening and gradual cultivation, these are just names that classify cultivation after sudden awakening. It is to be understood that each approach has aspects of sudden or gradual cultivation, not that the practice of samādhi and prajñā to the gradual and the shortcut method to the sudden. The practice of samādhi and prajñā is classified into the Following Appearance Gate (隨相門) and the Own Nature Gate (自性門) according to people's capacities, and the shortcut method is into the Investigating Hwadu Gate (參究門) and the Investigating Doubt Gate (參疑門). Speaking again, the point is not practical approach, but practitioners' capacities. Jinul's three major approaches are same as those.

Since Sakyamuni Buddha's first sermon, every practitioner has walked the path to each gate of practice until now. According to his/her own capacity, some seems fast, some slow, or some no attaining. There cannot be superiority and inferiority in the path of awakening. According to Jinul, if a practitioner attains sudden awakening, s/he walks a path of practice to cultivate saint's womb. Jinul calls this path the oxherd's practice.
