Abstract

The purpose of the present paper is to examine the origin and development of the 6-stages mindfulness of breathing considered to be created by Sarvāstivāda Yogācārins, especially some problems related to the integration into the orthodox theory of the spiritual practice of Sarvāstivādins in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya.

The historical development of the 6-stages mindfulness of breathing could be subdivided into three phases. In the first phase, only the 4-stages mindfulness of breathing appears, which corresponds to the first four stages of the 6-stages mindfulness of breathing. In the second phase, the 4-stages mindfulness of breathing is expanded to 6 stages including vivartta and pariśuddhi which correspond to the orthodox theory of the spiritual practice of Sarvāstivādins. In the third phase, all the 6-stages mindfulness of breathing is re-integrated into the orthodox theory of the spiritual practice of Sarvāstivādins as a preliminary practice. In the third phase, the 6-stages mindfulness of breathing, originally considered as vipaśyanā, is re-estimated as śamatha, but this re-estimation is only a theoretical result in order to integrate the 6-stages mindfulness of breathing into the orthodox theory of the spiritual practice of Sarvāstivādins.

6-stages mindfulness of breathing consists of gaṇanā, anugama, sthāpana, upalakṣaṇā, vivartta, and pariśuddhi. In these 6 stages, first four stages are practical technique of mindfulness of breathing, while last two stages correspond to the theory of spiritual practice from four smṛtyupasthāna to aśaikṣa. Therefore, it could be characterized as a compact and practical manual of spiritual practice of Sarvāstivādins, which consists of only one of the “two main gates of entering spiritual cultivation” i.e. mindfulness of breathing and the meditation on the impure (aśubhabhāvanā).

The nature of mindfulness of breathing is considered, like smṛtyupasthāna, not as smṛti but as prajñā. There are two different explanations on the nature of smṛtypasthāna in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya. If we could apply these views on the nature of mindfulness of breathing, it would be as follows: First, the nature of mindfulness of breathing is prajñā because [prajñā] is established on [the breathing] by smṛti. Second, the nature of mindfulness of breathing is prajñā because smṛti is established [on the breathing by prajñā].

There are different views on the problem that to which category mindfulness of breathing belongs, i.e. to vipaśyanā or to śamatha. Though originally independent spiritual practice, mindfulness of breathing is re-estimated as vipaśyanā or as śamatha according to the relation to other system of spiritual practice. Therefore it would be meaningless to discuss its characteristic without consideration to the relation to other spiritual practice.
