Abstract

In Buddhism, samādhi and ‘go to Nirvana after death’ are very important processes for enlightenment as a practical goal. Especially, samādhi is a concentrated consciousness during the practice of repetition of the Buddha, and is a necessary precondition for awakening and attaining Nirvana after death. It is of the utmost importance that a bodhisattva does not withdraw in the bodhi-citta during the practices. If a bodhisattva does not withdraw from the bodhi-citta the practitioner can be awakened. If a bodhisattva steps down, then the practitioner cannot achieve enlightenment. For instance, the practitioner falls into the mundane world or realms of the five hells. The path of the bodhisattva, however, is extremely difficult and sentient beings that exhibit weakness of mind may find it easy to withdraw from practice and so can not practice in their own way. Therefore, sūtras explain the sublingual route that is ‘go to Nirvana after death.’ The typical sūtras are The Three Pure Land Sūtras: The Larger Sūtra (Sūtra on the Buddha of Infinite Life Delivered by Śākyamuni Buddha), The Contemplation Sūtra (Sūtra on the Visualization of the Buddha of Infinite Life Delivered by Śākyamuni Buddha), and The Smaller Sūtra (Sūtra on Amitāyus Buddha Delivered by Śākyamuni Buddha).

The meaning of ‘go to Nirvana after death’ in The Three Pure Land Sūtras corresponds with prajñā bodhisattvas, and as such can always meet the Buddha from one country to another. In addition, the repetition of the Buddha is closely related with prajñā and so cannot be separated from each other. Seeing the Buddha, seeing the Buddha’s nature, and ‘go to Nirvana after death’ are attained by Samādhi of repetition of the Buddha, and cannot lose the function of prajñāparamita. Therefore, two doctrinal thoughts, the thought of Pure Land and the thought of the Mādhyamaka mutually complement each other.

Furthermore, samādhi concentrated practice of repetition of the Buddha is an important condition for ‘go to Nirvana after death.’ The meaning of ‘go to Nirvana after death’ is two-pronged: one is that the person with the one-point mind can see the Buddha or see the Buddha’s nature and so that person can achieve the reality of the world in the mundane world. The other is actually to go to Nirvana, or Pure Land after death. It signifies the indomitably resolved bodhisattvas’ mind and its contents that compose the nine stages.

It indicates that after bodhisattvas possess a firm belief, they can pray the Buddha’s name repetitively, which depends upon the degree of samādhi. Thus, the samādhi of the repetition of the Buddha’s name is a kind of Dhyāna. This paper researches those notions through The Three Pure Land Sūtras and the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra
