Abstract

Pagoda, also named as tapa or stupa, are the places where the Śarīra(Relics of Buddha) are enshrined. Stupas are symbolic sculptures of Buddha’s nirvana. They inspire worship and reverence as symbolic constructions; and as targets of worship, they serve as sources of good practices and good fortunes.

The orientation of stupa in Buddhist temple has its root in the Buddhist sacred scriptures. Therefore, stupas are structures of equal importance to Daeungjeon, the main building of temples. In that light, stupas are significant in Buddhist theology and Buddhist rituals as the place of holding important Buddhist symbols. Many scholars have already researched the aesthetic quality and different styles in the fields of art history and history of construction. Tapdoli Stupa walk-around for good fortune, is an important topic in folklore of Buddhism.

The paper took an ethnological, folkloristic analysis of Tapdoli practiced among the Buddhists around pagodas in Buddhist temple. Confirming the existence of Tapdoli in the Buddhist scripture as Buddhist temple syncretized and localized over time interacting with Taoism and folk beliefs in forms of Chilsunggak and Sanshingak. The paper focused on Tapdoli as a form of folk ritual rather than the orientation of stupas and their symbolic meanings.
