Abstract

Geumsansa temple hyangwan(incense burner) belonged to Horyu-ji temple for a long time, but it was donated to the Tokyo National Museum and now it is on display at the gallery of Horyu-ji treasure

Although only the lower part of hyangwan was left, however the remaining inscriptions allow you to find out what was made in 1178. The delicate silver inlaid pattern and the size are evaluated as the highest quality works comparable to the Pyochungsa temple hyangwan.

According to inscriptions, this hyangwan was made of bronze and was enshrined in great hall of Geumsansa(金山寺 大殿) for Maitreya. Gojeong who was maker is believed to have been a very talented inlaid craftsman.

In addition, what the incumbent bureaucrats of the Gaegyeong and the former subordinate bureaucrats as a devout patrons participated in the buddhist activity shows an aspect of local buddhist activity.

It is necessary to pay attention to Kibisa temple of the mere-ideation order which is closely related to Geumsansa temple. The litch design and a pair of arabesque design on this hyangwan was first appeared was the stylistic indicator in study on pattern history of Goryeo period.

Also it is estimated that four sanskrit characters in circle was inlaid on the body of the hyangwan like Pyochungsa's hyangwan.

The Geumsansa hyangwan that has the important value of study on Goryeo hyangwan should be investigated thoroughly about the past activities such as the process of the collection as well as the importance of inscriptions.
