Abstract

In recent years, more people are concerned about Buddhist life of leisure that is consisted of direct and actual experience of monk's ascetic practices in Korea. So, in this study we explored the reason why they participate in Buddhist life of leisure - what kind of happiness participants are experienced, who have more satisfaction through experiencing the practice- and whether Buddhist life of leisure is alternative to commercialized leisure or not.

The findings of this study are as follows.

First, all participant experienced a peaceful state of mind (psychological or mental well being) in stead of physical pleasure. I think it is related to Buddhist view of happiness by which we should remove the roots of suffering as such physical pleasure, lust, greed, anger etc. Second, the person who are more interested in Buddhist view of happiness has more satisfaction and feels more happiness. Third, to be alternative to commercialized leisure, Buddhist life of leisure is changed from monk's religious ascetic practices to ascetic practices as a life of leisure.
