Abstract

This article focused on the research of relief figures in Buddhist pagodas during Silla dynasty in Gyeongju. Among 19 Buddhist pagoda reliefs which were clearly identified discovery site, 8 cases of twin pagodas reliefs were found such as Sachunwangsa temple’s. With the study of relief style and iconography, I tried all into chronological list.

Main topics of pagoda reliefs are consists of 4 different guardian subjects such as Vajra Guardian, Four Cardinal Guardian, Eight Devas and 12 Zodiac Guardian. Some exceptional pagodas showing Buddha images on the pagoda relief in 9th century were excluded in this article. Stairs in the pagoda were commonly installed in 2 sides or 4 sides, rarely 1 side too.

This dynamic diversity in pagoda reliefs were caused by active influx of new Buddhist philosophy and technical development in pagoda construction. This made new twin pagodas construction and vertical distribution with hierarchical order.
